Dreaming Death Palace of Dreams Book 1 edition by J Kathleen Cheney Romance eBooks

Really enjoyed this book.

The worldbuilding is complex and fascinating. In a post-invasion world, multiple races and cultures all interact in their own way. There's a background of political complexities and history.

But it's Mikael and Shironne, the main characters, that draw you into the book. Mikael dreams about murders as they happen. Shironne, a blind girl with a huge psychic talent, sees his dreams and by touching the corpse, can tell a lot more about the background. Though she's legally a child - 4 months short of the age of majority - she is brought in to help investigate a string of murders. They corpses seem to be about blood magic, an Indiana-Jones kind of cult ritual involving bleeding victims to death. The deaths are moving ever closer to people Mikael knows and loves.

Dreaming Death Palace of Dreams Book 1 edition by J Kathleen Cheney Romance eBooks Reviews

Great start to a new series. Looking forward to the next book! Strong world building with interesting characters.
Excellent writing and meticulous world building
I loved this fantasy murder mystery. The setting, the characters, and the plotting were all very well done. Even the secondary characters seemed real, and had real problems. The story came to a good conclusion, but it was so well done that I'm desperate for the sequel.
The first book of a trilogy, Dreaming Death, is a well-written story that blends the genres of fantasy, mystery and romance. I'm not typically a fantasy genre reader, but this book has changed that. I haven't had such a keen interest in "what is happening next" in a book in quite a while and found myself reading it every moment I had an opportunity. I was kept guessing all the way to the end. I can't wait for the second book of the trilogy to be published!
Shironne is tired of people treating her like a child even if she technically still is one. She has a job to do, helping to solve a string of ritual murders. Cheney has woven a complex and multilayered fantasy world with intrigue and involved political situations. The last few chapters will have you on the edge of your seat. Shiromne and Mikael are thoroughly engaging characters and you'll love spending time with them.
I enjoyed the Golden City novels enough to start following the author's blog, where I happily discovered she was working on a new series - the short stories on the blog for that new series intrigued me enough to preorder Dreaming in Death as well, and it did not disappoint. It took me a little while to shift "worlds" and grasp the differences and similarities of this new one, but I quickly found myself swept away by the characters and the mystery, not to mention by the interesting premise underlying it all. I was happy to see that the seeds for future novels have already been planted (no worries though, this one is still a stand-alone novel, not a cliffhanger) and look forward to discovering where Shironne and Mikael's journey takes them next.
In DREAMING DEATH, J. Kathleen Cheney has done a wonderful job of building a lush, baroque fantasy world with compelling characters, and then using it as the setting for a murder mystery (I love mixing and matching genres). Thrown together as investigators, Mikael Lee and Shironne Anjir have unsettling magical abilities (Mikael dreams of people's deaths, seeing the event through the eyes of the victim, while Shironne is a touch sensitive whose powers hide an even more frightening ability) that they need to harness in order to solve the mystery and stop the murderers. This pair did a fantastic job driving the plot, bringing the story to a satisfying end without shutting off hope of more books in this world. We can only wait and hope.
