Elfquest Journey to Sorrows End Wendy Pini Richard Pini 9780441183715 Books Reviews
Although the story is fantastical in nature, it holds the universality of wanting a place to belong, fate, overcoming fears, and the conflict between man and the unknown. Wendi and Richard's textual adaptations of their first five comics offer a new look to the story, and a great deal more detail. Written from a third-person view, it allows the reader to feel like a part of the group, while not having to feel like their suffering all he hardships that the elves feel. The biggest things that drew me to this book, were the characters. They are so complexly simple, that it's hard to remember, sometimes, that they were originally ink and paper drawings, telling their stories through pictures, as well as words. Secondarily, I was drawn by the world, itself. How clearly and vividly it's described has captured me from the first time I even heard of Abode, distinctly the fact that it was inhabited by such creatures as the elves and their bonded wolves. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed realms of magic, love, fantasy, trial, or challenge. It holds all of these, and much, much more within it's comforting arms, and is definitely an excellent escape from reality.
How do you rate something like this? Wendy Pini has an exquisite sense of pacing, a master's command of the English language, and a grand story to tell. Without hesitation I would recommend any of her works.
This is the first book in the series. Told in text form, it stands easily on its own -- people who don't have or want the graphic art series won't miss anything here. It tells the story of a band of elves who are persecuted out of their home and must find a new one before they die in the desert. Along the way they encounter a new band of elves, hostile trolls, and some even more hostile humans. Sure, they're elves and they're cute, but these elves have courage, heart, and compassion -- they are as accessible and understandable as we are, metaphors for what we wish we could be.
Unlike many novelizations of graphic art, this book is accessible to newcomers and doesn't leave out important things. It expands some parts of the graphic art series, adding details like background, private thoughts, and extra interactions.
While I have read the comics I have failed to get my hands on the novels. So, when the opportunity arose, for a mere $3, I grabbed one of the novels up. When I went and looked at Goodreads there was an unfortunate lack of reviews with which to judge the book. So, I decided to read it and write my own review.
Hopes before reading expansion of what I already know about the universe, internal dialogue of characters, further character development, and maybe I’ll see something I missed before.
Review
As a fan I struggled to pull any images out of my mind other than the ones I had already seen in the comics. Whether that is a flaw in the writing or just that I have become so sure of what everything should look like is up in the air. However, I did not feel that the descriptions matched with the images that I had seen in the comics, but perhaps that is just me.....
I feel some of the characters are less compelling in the novel than in the comic Moonshade for example lost some of her appeal in the novel. She seems less strong. Meanwhile, other characters are MORE compelling. Rainsong is a character that in the comics I paid little mind to. But she gets an opportunity to shine more in the novel.
A small nitpick about the artwork. It did not always line up with what is going on in the story. For example, the image of the healing comes 5 pages before the actual healing.
There were a few gems of information that you would not glean from the comics alone which made this book, for me, worth the read. I did enjoy that I got to see the world from several different perspectives. I feel the characters who didn’t get a lot of attention in the comics were given more attention in the novel. Although some fan favorites did not get as much time centerstage.
Overall, I think if you are not a fan of the comics this book will not appeal. The writing isn’t super strong, but it isn’t awful. The description of the elves are weak in my opinion, but if you read the comics that isn’t that important because you already know what they look like. There are a smattering of illustrations done by Wendy throughout the book which may help new comers to the series. But it's clear the main audience is going to be their fans.
Awesome story line, would not hesitate to recommend, it's one of those types of books can you can read over again.
Love ElfQuest since childhood and enjoy reading the novels just as much as the graphic novels.
It was in perfect condition and my sister is just in love with the series!
You should definitely pick up this book (and the comics, too!) if you're into well-written high fantasy. Wendy and Richard Pini have made a world full of many characters that you will love, relate to, and even mourn when they die. This is the very beginning of a story that has been going on for over 30 years, and is still going. If you enjoy elves, action, love, and even betrayal, ElfQuest is for you!
