I read a ton of dystopias and apocalyptic books, everything from The Road and 1984 to YA dystopias like the Hunger Games, Divergent, and more. Good books of this type are rare, but I keep reading them because I like the subject matter. With the advent of self-publishing digital-only books, the books are not only getting worse, but also the ability to find good ones is much harder.

On to The Dawn. Unlike other reviews of the series' books, I am not going to outline the plot! This is a review.

I really liked Book 1 and have now purchased the box set of all 5 for $0.99. That's a steal :) Although one would not classify this as a ground-breaker or potential literary classic, it stands out in that it's well-written and manages to not feel like it's ripped off others in the genre or contrived. Although it is thematically similar to others of the genre, it introduces new elements to stand out and engage the reader. And it's written/edited well enough that it doesn't drive me crazy. As a "word nerd" by nature and by trade, I cannot read books with major grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors. I was glad that this one was done much better! I hope the next 4 are just as good!

The Dawn The Bombs Fall Volume 1 Miss Michelle Lisa Muckley 9781501024672 Books Reviews

This book, although it is a setup for an extended series, is also good as a stand-alone story. Of course there is a hook at the end to try keeping you interested in the series. However, I did not see it as one of those where the author chops up a longer book into smaller bits just to make a series, with storylines waving around unresolved all over the place.

The title is a touch misleading, since most of the story takes place at least ten years after the bombs actually fell. There are some flashbacks to pre-bomb activities to help with back-story, mostly in the final hours before the bombs explode. Most of the book deals with life in a skyscraper where a couple thousand people live, with no ability to leave or even see outside. The story line is dark, but not unexpected in a post-war dystopian book series.

One thing I like is the focus on just a few characters who are well-developed and readable. The primary characters here are Zack, a former civil engineer whose office was in the tower pre-bomb, along with his friend Leonard, an older workmate also trapped there during the explosions. Then there is Emily, who we see far more in the flashback sequences, though she does appear in an unlikely place when she meets Zack. This will obviously be the main relationship going forward in the series. We meet Emily's father, but his character will likely be more important in the coming books. Of course, there are many other characters, but the focus is on how Zack interacts and tries to survive each day in the tower.

Without delving too deeply into the plot, much of this book consists of Zack's daily life, his actions and how he tries to help others through his limited resources. The drudgery of the tower and the work they do as part of the country (?) of new Omega is described very well. It sets up the structure of the tower colonies (there are several), and as the book goes on, the inequities between those of the worker towers and the governing Omega Tower become more evident. The Ten Creeds of Omega are mentioned several times which cover rights and responsibilities of New Omega citizens, but it is plain that by now, they are just meaningless words to just about everyone. This inequitable arrangement is somewhat reminiscent of the Districts versus the Capitol in The Hunger Games, but it is a common plot device, and is in no way a copy of The Hunger Games.

Something that is not at all touched on, at least in the first book, is how all these towers were built and interconnected (though miles apart physically) for different utilities and functions, but there is no way (supposedly) for a person to travel between towers. Delta Tower, where Zack lives, provides water for all the towers. Alpha Tower provides Oxygen. Other towers provide other things, though only inferred in the book.

I found the pace to be a bit uneven, but not distracting. The first 40% or so, things move along rather well as we learn about the tower, Zack's life, and some of what happened before the bombs. Then there is about 15-20 percent in the middle where action slows down, and there is a lot of dealing with the various darker parts of the tower, where humanity really is not very pleasant. It is important for future understanding, most likely, but hard and slow to read. Then the third part comes in, and the book becomes a really quick read, hard to put down. Since the reader is so heavily invested in Zack and his life, the end really makes one want to continue on in the series.

Spelling mistakes are nearly non-existent, though there are a few dropped words now and then that make you back up and read a sentence twice. Thankfully, this all minimal. Overall, I will be going on in this series, and that is a statement I seldom make with these book series.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

So let me be honest, I went into this book not expecting much. That is not a complaint. I just never know what to expect with this type of book and I have learned never to expect anything. You just never know where you will end up with these books.

There were some issues for me and this book. The characters just weren't developed for me. The back stories were just not enough for me. I really had a hard time relating to any of them. When I read a book I want to be able to relate to at least one character. They were ok, but I just couldn't find myself connecting with any of them.

Now that I have gotten that out of the way, let me say that the idea behind the book is a great one. The way we get an idea of what life is like for these people in Delta Tower was great. We get a real vision of how life for those who were not in control after the world is destroyed. I just wish we got more about how they ended up there.

Now all of these issues might be cleared up in the later books. I am willing to wait and see how things work out for the characters. I am hopeful with the next book we will get more of a back story and really I want more from the other towers. I want to see if we get a chance for Zach to see Emily again. I want to see what the rest of the world looks like now, not just what they see from the windows in Delta Tower.

Pros Great story idea

Cons Characters were not easy to relate to and the story was hard to get into at the beginning.

Overall rating I am torn about recommending it.
Post Apocalypse is my genre of reading and although I found this story interesting, it fell short on character development. I couldn't really connect to any of the characters to either root for their success or prey for their death. I did get confused at a couple parts in the book as to why it was even in there and the time jump from bombs falling to years later was not expected or wanted. How did they get from A to K? Some parts of the dialogue was frustrating as I had to guess who was saying what. The over plot is very interesting; however, it was planned to be a long book series of short in length books. I think book two is 64 pages. Because I didn't get hooked on the plot or characters I don't plan on reading the next book in the series. There is a mystery the author is trying to get you hooked on, but it just didn't happen with me. I had no problem with her style of writing, but I needed more action, more twists, more character development.
