What. A. Wild. Ride.

On the orders of graphic novel villain Mr Tender, two of Alice’s classmates nearly stab her to death. Now, fourteen years later with a new country and different last name, Alice struggles to put the past behind her. More than one of Mr Tender’s minions is stalking her, putting her anxiety into overdrive. A mysterious package in her dead father’s handwriting arrives, telling Alice in code not to trust anyone, but if she’s going to survive, literally and metaphorically, she will need help.

Inspired by the real life case of two mentally ill girls who stabbed a third based on Slenderman, an internet legend, MR TENDER’S GIRL had me guessing until the very end. Although fast-paced, Carter Wilson’s unique writing often had me pausing at the beauty of his words.

Alice was a wounded, flawed, often unlikable character. At one point I wondered if she was stalking herself. I wanted to jump into my kindle screen and take her to therapy. Her mother was a piece of work. Horrible is an understatement. You’d think if one’s teenage daughter barely survives an attempted murder, one wouldn’t blame said daughter for ruining her life. Maybe that’s just me.

The plot required some suspension of disbelief, but I thoroughly enjoyed every page of MR TENDER’S GIRL.

Mister Tender Girl A Novel Carter Wilson Books Reviews

My friend suggested this book. We share reading recommendations with each other all the time. I am so happy I took her advice. This book is amazing! So many twists and turns your head will spin. Just when you think you have something figured out....another twist! Want a book that keeps you on the edge of your seat? One that challenges your mind? This one is for you! Does not disappoint. Comes full circle with all questions answered in the end. Loved this one! A MUST READ! I immediately purchased 2 more of Carter Wilson's books. Can't wait to read and review them!
I bought this book on a bit of a whim; it mildly interested me but when I started it, I couldn't put it down. Alice is a very deep and well developed character. I ached for her vulnerability despite her tough exterior. I did not see the end coming, which I love. This book also made me think a bit deeper about survivors of stalkers/psychos forced into "fame" simply by being victimized by someone else. It's double victimhood, so to speak. The last few paragraphs were absolutely golden. It was brought to a beautiful, peaceful end, which felt like being able to breathe again after this harried ordeal. I loved this book!
Loved this book. Extremely suspenseful, I could hardly put it down.
I was hesitant to read this since it was semi-inspired by a true crime and I was afraid it would be exploitative but it deviates so far from the true events that it feels very much like it's own story being told. There were some unbelievable moments that strained plausibility but all in all the plot came together in a memorable albeit foreseeable way. The main character is courageous and the book is well written with some turn of phrases that stay with you.
Strong writing, good buildup of mystery and suspense. I cared about the main character and was eager to keep reading to find out what happened to her. And I read the book in a relatively short time span (for me) which speaks well of it. Recommended.

Despite that I am familiar with the true story that inspired this book, I did not realize the link to that true story until well into the book. I try not to read too much about a book before I read it (ditto with movies and TV shows). Not making that connection added to my enjoyment as I did not try to compare the book to the real-life story. By the time I figured it out, I was hooked on this story.

I'm calling this "psychological suspense". The commonly-accepted categories for books like this seem to be "mystery/thriller" or "physchological thriller", but I'm not sure why "thriller" is so commonly used for a book that is more "suspense". Subtlety and nuance, I know. Oh, and cemantics. ) But for me, this book was more "suspense" than "thriller". But it did give me a thrill reading it. )
This book is brilliant in what it brings into the spectrum of psychological thrillers, containing the surprise element through the intensity of razor sharp twists. The fact that the story is almost nonfiction is pure crazy.
At times I felt overwhelmed by the messed up characters, each more damaged than the other. This being in fact a surge towards the insane search for Mr Tender. Crazy crazier.. then boom, he is who he is and he proves his even crazier psyche, as if just being Mr Tender was not enough. The connections between characters and their past is a tangled web of clues and certitudes in a rediscovered past by Alice.
I’m going to be honest, I usually don’t touch thrillers. I’m more of a fantasy reader really. The only reason I picked this up was because it was recommended to me by one of the bookstagramers that I follow on Instagram. But, let me tell you I AM SOOOOO GLAD I PICKED THIS UP! Mister Tender’s Girl was AWESOME! I wanna say it was a gem, is that cliche? I guess I’m cliche then. I don’t want to spoil anything but it had what felt like 8 thousand twists that had me going crazy the entire time. The characters were all really interesting and you didn’t have to slog through 8 pages of introduction for each one which I appreciate immensely! It all wrapped up so well. I just really recommend everyone read this. I’m not really good with reviewing without spoiling so that’s pretty much what I got. Read it!
